Adding the scar is a detail someone could've easily forgotten to add, yet brings so much to this piece. It says he has seen many battles. Even without reading "commander" in the description, you get the feeling of a strategist or general from the combination of his scar, his pose and the pipe.
Tobacco has long been a part of the warrior caste, and the type of smoking is built into the hierarchy. It is interesting how it has followed these lines in different cultures since it first left the Americas. Cigarettes are for grunts, vanguard and other front-line soldiers; cigars for generals and field commanders; and pipes or nothing at all for the strategists and commanders.
This piece is outstanding on many levels. Look forward to seeing more!
